The Jersey Project

The Jersey project is a one-week residential project for teenage girls aged 14+. It has been running for over 7 years and is organised in collaboration with friends of Baytree based on the Island. The group travel together by plane to Jersey and stay in Hilgrove Variety Youth centre in Grouville. Activities will include: team sports, drama, dance, educational visits, sharing jobs around the home, work experience at a home for the elderly and personal as well as group mentoring. The Jersey Activity Week has been organised to help you gain in leadership skills and to assess whether you are ready to take on the challenge of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Where is Jersey?

Jersey 2004: Well done to you all!

On 21st August, 8 girls and 3 leaders set off for Jersey on a Leadership and Teamwork residential. The journey involved travelling from London to Gatwick airport and from there to the Island of Jersey.

The Group:

Activities

The aim of the project was to introduce the girls to a completely different environment to the urban one they live in; to help them relax and learn to discover the joys of the outdoors; to have a fun educational experience. The programme of activities was designed to be as active and stimulating as possible.

Visit to the Gerald Durrell zoo

The girls learnt that animals need to be looked after in their natural environment and the importance of conserving species on the verge of extinction.

Glass Painting

After watching a demonstration from a professional glass painter, the girls were invited to paint their own candle pot. They all did this with impressive skill and great attention to detail.

Boogie Boarding

Battling against strong winds, we ran into the sea at St. Ouen’s beach to experience the great sensation when you ride a wave!

Rock Pooling

Peter Double from the Ministry of Environment in Jersey took us rock pooling to discover just some of the many species living in the wilderness of Jersey’s beaches at low tide. The girls were fascinated despite the bad weather. They each received a video at the end of the morning.

Visiting the elderly

Visiting an old people’s home. On the last day we put on a show which made their week!
